The tiger is the largest cat species in the world; the largest tiger sub-species is the Siberian tiger. The approximate weight of the male is 500 pounds and the female is 300 pounds. The average length of the male tiger is 10 feet and the female 8 feet. The average height of a tiger is 3 feet. The appearance of the tiger depends to a great extent on where the animal lives. Tigers that live in cold regions are paler in colour and larger in size; their fur is long and thick. In warmer climates, tigers are smaller in size and more colourful; they have shorter, thinner fur. The fur on the tiger's back is very thick and the stripes are pale. The colour of the Siberian tiger is yellowish-brown, while the Indian tiger is reddish-brown. The stripes on a tiger are very dark. Like all cats, tigers have sharp claws and teeth.

There are only around 200 of the white tigers left in the world. White tigers are an Asian species, found from the frozen tundra of the Soviet Far East, south to the humid jungles of Malaya and Indonesia, and west to the hot, hardwood forests of India. There are five living subspecies; three others are already extinct. Current estimates put the world population of wild tigers at about 5,000-7,000, the most numerous race being the Bengal race, distributed among some 18 tiger reserves and sanctuaries of India (and a half-dozen in Nepal and Bangladesh), accounting for over two-thirds of all wild tigers.

Tigers have been hunted heavily by humans over the past few years. The tiger population in the Indian sub-continent has declined seriously in the past fifty years. Nepal has only two hundred tigers, while India has about four thousand, a serious decline from the past figures. China and Korea are the biggest criminals as far as tiger poaching is concerned. In the nineteen hundreds, the entire tiger population was more than one lakh. However, today the global tiger population is less than ten thousand animals.

ReplyDeleteExtinction is a natural process...many species have become extincted in the past with no interaction with humans (ex: dinosaurs). However,it seems to me that the rate of extinctions across the board (with many animals) is rising...Do you think this is true? Or do you think that we have become a true technological society...in which information is readily available? In other words, has the extiniction of species really increased or are we just more aware of it?
ReplyDeletei think that it has gotten alot better then what is was in the past. Then again like you said that we are just more aware of it i think is a possible also
